The Making of a Disciple - In this Manner, Pray
Sermon given by Senior Pastor, Dan Tabolt
“In this Manner,
Pray”
The Accumulating Investments of Prayer
Opening Statements:
The Wedding of a nephew.
Waves on the ocean.
Questions from God of the future returns.
Rev 5:8 Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and
the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and
golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
Rev 8:3 He was given much incense, that he should offer it with the
prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the
throne. 4 And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints ,
ascended before God from the angel's hand. 5 Then the angel took the
censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And
there were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake. NKJV
Acts 10:3 About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an
angel of God coming in and saying to him, "Cornelius!"
4 And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, "What is it, lord?"
So he said to him, "Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial
before God. 5 Now send men… NKJV

NAMES OF GOD
In the ancient world, knowing another's name was a special privilege
that offered access to that person's thoughts and life. We all know people
by their names. Benedict Arnold, Princess Diana, John F. Kennedy, Judas
Iscariot, Martin Luther King. All these names have an instant picture that
comes up in our minds. It may be good picture or a bad one, whatever it
is, their life has played it out in some way. With each one of these
people, their name has come to represent who and what they are. God
favored His people by revealing Himself by several names which offered
special insight into His love and righteousness. When we think of real
prayer it is an ongoing discovery of our God. True prayer is not about you
alone. True prayer is always about God and His kingdom. This morning we
continue our pursuit of developing true prayer in our lives.
“A believing people will always be a praying people.”
A Praying People:
I wonder how much true Bible teaching each one of us has had on prayer. I
was taught to pray in, “vain repetition”. I was taught to pray to the
saints or Mary. For some of us the only prayer we have learned is by being
around others who pray. It could be some scripture that we have taken out
of context like, “ask anything” or, “if two of you agree together about
anything”. For some people, God is the big Santa Claus that we can just
nag at or say anything we want to and he will do it.
Maybe we think we have to spend hours at a time in prayer to get anywhere
with God. In my humble opinion there are some keys points to prayer that
we must understand.
1. Prayer needs to be understood biblically.
2. Prayer needs to be a lifestyle.
3. There are seeking seasons in prayer. [prayer and fasting]
I. The Model Prayer
Matt 6:5-7 The Model Prayer (Luke 11:2-4)
"And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they
love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets,
that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their
reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have
shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your
Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. 7 And when you pray, do
not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will
be heard for their many words. 8 "Therefore do not be like them. For your
Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this
manner, therefore, pray:
Matt 6:8 "Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things
you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your
will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily
bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. 13 And do
not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours
is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
II. Jesus taught, “In this manner pray.”
A. Not vainly but deliberately: Who better to learn how to pray from than
Jesus. Prayer is a mystery that must be read, explored and developed in
every Christian’s life. Jesus teaches us not to be “vain” in our approach
to prayer but we are to be deliberate in prayer.
B. When, not if, you pray: What is your manner? Manner could refer to our
habit toward prayer. So the question first put to you is, are you in the
habit of praying or not praying? Does prayer have Habitation in your life
or no place in your life?
III. Jesus teaches the pattern.
The Lord’s Prayer or Our Father should not be looked at as a canned prayer
that we can say and then proclaim that we have prayed. It is better looked
at as the table of contents of a book laid out in chapters to be read.
1. Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
Jehovah-jireh - This name is translated as "The-LORD-Will-Provide,"
commemorating the provision of the ram in place of Isaac for Abraham's
sacrifice (Gen 22:14).
Jehovah-nissi - This name means "The-LORD-Is-My-Banner," in honor of God's
defeat of the Amalekites (Ex 17:15).
Jehovah-shalom - This phrase means "The-LORD-Is-Peace," the name Gideon
gave the altar which he built in Ophrah (Judg 6:24).
Jehovah-shammah - This phrase expresses the truth that
"The-LORD-Is-There," referring to the city which the prophet Ezekiel saw
in his vision (Ezek 48:35).
Jehovah-tsebaoth - This name, translated "The-LORD-of-hosts," was used in
the days of David and the prophets, witnessing to God the Savior who is
surrounded by His hosts of heavenly power (1 Sam 1:3).
Jehovah Elohe Israel - This name means "LORD-God-of-Israel," and it
appears in Isaiah, Jeremiah, and the Psalms. Other names similar to this
are Netsah Israel, "The Strength of Israel" (1 Sam 15:29); and Abir
Yisrael "The Mighty One of Israel" (Isa 1:24).
2. Our FATHER in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
Father in heaven
Father who see, is, was, knows, forgives, feeds, speaks
Father of living, of our Lord Jesus, all good things, of glory, fatherless
A sad reality in my life is that I never got to know my natural father. I
was thinking of the times I remembered him and they are very few. But yet
with my heavenly Father I have this great invitation.
John 17:3- And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true
God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
1 Peter 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and
watchful in your prayers. NKJV
