The Year of the Invitation : Possessing Your Land
Sermon given by Senior Pastor, Dan Tabolt
"Exceeding
great and precious promises." 2 Peter 1:4
If you would know experimentally the preciousness of the promises, and
enjoy them in your own heart, meditate much upon them. There are promises
which are like grapes in the wine-press; if you will tread them the juice
will flow. Thinking over the hallowed words will often be the prelude to
their fulfillment. While you are musing upon them, the boon which you are
seeking will insensibly come to you. Many a Christian who has thirsted for
the promise has found the favour which it ensured gently distilling into
his soul even while he has been considering the divine record; and he has
rejoiced that ever he was led to lay the promise near his heart.
But besides
meditating upon the promises, seek in your soul to receive them as being
the very words of God. Speak to yourselves like this, "If I were dealing
with a man's promise, I should carefully consider the ability and the
character of the man who had covenanted with me. So with the promise of
God; my eye must not be so much fixed upon the greatness of the
mercy--that may stagger me; as upon the greatness of the promise--that
will cheer me. My soul, it is God, it is even my God, and God that cannot
lie, it is He who speaks to us. This word of His that we are considering,
is as true as His own existence. He is a God unchangeable. He has not
altered the thing which has gone out of His mouth, nor called back one
single consolatory sentence. Nor does He lack any power; it is the God
that made the heavens and the earth who has spoken these things. Nor can
He fail in wisdom as to the time when He will show the favors, for He
knows when it is best to give and when better to withhold. Therefore,
seeing that it is the word of a God so true, so immutable, so powerful, so
wise, I will and must believe the promise." If we meditate upon the
promises like this, and consider the Promiser, we shall experience their
sweetness, and obtain their fulfillment.
I. Graduation Day. Now what will you Do.
1. God has given His word on it.
Josh 21:43 The Promise Fulfilled
So the LORD gave to Israel all the land of which He had sworn to give to
their fathers, and they took possession of it and dwelt in it. 44 The LORD
gave them rest all around, according to all that He had sworn to their
fathers. And not a man of all their enemies stood against them; the LORD
delivered all their enemies into their hand. 45 Not a word failed of any
good thing which the LORD had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to
pass.
2. God has qualified [made able] us to be partakers of inheritance.
Col 1:11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for
all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father
who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in
the light. 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed
us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption
through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. NKJV
3. Beware of the Danger of Spiritual Laziness.
Matt 16:26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world,
Luke 12:18-21 I will pull down my barns and build greater…
Matt 25:14-28 The Parable of the Talents (Luke 19:11-27)
Jesus tells us a story right after he talks about wise and foolish
servants and the coming judgment. Three servants are given talents. One
received five another received three and another received one. The first
two went out with that which they have received and traded and doubled
their investment but the third did nothing with the talent the Lord had
given him. The statement from our Lord toward the first two was well done
my faithful servant but to the last it was. “You wicked and lazy servant”.
II. Your Ace in the Hole. What is in your hand?
Elisha and the Widow's Oil
2 Kings 4:1 A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried
out to Elisha, saying, "Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that
your servant feared the LORD. And the creditor is coming to take my two
sons to be his slaves."
2 So Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you
have in the house?" And she said, "Your maidservant has nothing in the
house but a jar of oil."
3 Then he said, "Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your
neighbors — empty vessels; do not gather just a few. 4 And when you have
come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it
into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones."
5 So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who
brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out. 6 Now it came to pass,
when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, "Bring me another
vessel."
And he said to her, "There is not another vessel." So the oil ceased. 7
Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, "Go, sell the oil and
pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest." NKJV
1. This story begins with a cry from a certain woman. This woman was
someone who had a connection with promises. Her husband was a man of
covenant but now he is dead. It is only when we truly see our hopelessness
in ourselves that we can truly see the greatness of our inheritance. When
she saw all she could lose the cry was made.
2. Elisha asked her what she wanted. Many Christian’s don’t even know what
they want. Why is that? Elisha asked her what she had of value in her
house. You could say with the back ground of what we are talking about
today that she said “I have these promises, this talent this promises of
victory and life.
And she said, "Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of
oil."
Do you see the value of your covenant with God?
III. Taking Ownership of the Promises.
1. Receiving a Vision of Ownership. Owning your salvation.
A. Understand the purpose of your LZ. [Landing Zone] The whole environment
of the LZ is from the point they intend to possess the Land.
Acts 2:40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them,
saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation." 41 Then those who gladly
received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls
were added to them. NKJV
B. Possess Your Salvation.
Prov 25:28 Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken
down, without walls. NKJV
1 Thess 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you
should abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should know how
to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in passion of
lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God;
How is Your Spiritual Hygiene?
1. How are your spiritual molder skills?
2. Are you gaining more control of your spirit? [sitting on a chair]
3. Are you studying to be approved of God?
4. How is your Secret Place? Ps 91
Josh 24:14 "Now therefore, fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in
truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side
of the River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD! 15 And if it seems evil to you
to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve,
whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of
the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as
for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."
