The Year of the Invitation : Wait for the Promise?
Sermon given by Senior Pastor, Dan Tabolt
My testimony of receiving
the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 1:4-8 The Holy Spirit Promised
And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart
from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He
said, "you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but
you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." 6
Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, "Lord,
will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7 And He said to
them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put
in His own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit
has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in
all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." NKJV
I. Jesus Spoke of a Coming Blessing.
A. Receiving the Spirit Makes You Ready.
John 16:11-14 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear
them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will
guide you into all truth ; for He will not speak on His own authority, but
whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14
He will glorify Me, NKJV
B. Receiving the Spirit Brings, Conviction, Righteousness, and Judgment
John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that
I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but
if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will
convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: NKJV
C. Receiving the Spirit Makes You Teachable.
John 14:25 "These things I have spoken to you while being present with
you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit , whom the Father will send in My
name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all
things that I said to you. NKJV
II. The Church Must Receive this Blessing.
A. Perilous Times and Perilous Men
2 Tim 3:1-5 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:
2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud,
blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving,
unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good,
4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of
God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such
people turn away! NKJV
B. We Have Never Heard
Acts 19:1 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having
passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some
disciples 2 he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you
believed?" So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether
there is a Holy Spirit." 3 And he said to them, "Into what then were you
baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism." 4 Then Paul said, "John
indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that
they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ
Jesus." 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord
Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon
them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. 7 Now the men were about
twelve in all. NKJV
C. Signs of His Falling
Acts 10:44-46 The Holy Spirit Falls on the Gentiles
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all
those who heard the word. 45 And those of the circumcision who believed
were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy
Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them
speak with tongues and magnify God. NKJV
D. A Gift for all Ages and all Generations
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you
shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you
and to your children , and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord
our God will call."
III. The Power of Waiting on The Lord.
A. Coming of the Holy Spirit!
Acts 2:1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one
accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of
a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were
sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and
one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation
under heaven NKJV
B. "Whatever could this mean?"
Acts 2:14 Peter's Sermon But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised
his voice and said to them, "Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem,
let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15 For these are not drunk,
as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is
what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17'And it shall come to pass in the
last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your
sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams. 18 And on My menservants and on My
maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall
prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth
beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned
into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and
awesome day of the LORD. 21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls
on the name of the LORD Shall be saved.' NKJV
C. Have You Received The Promise?
But wait for the Promise of the Father, 8 …you shall receive power when
the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in
Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
NKJV
